Tekleab Mengisteab

Held 7,045 days  Arrested November 2004 in Eritrea

Prisoner Details

In 2004, three courageous Mekanehiwet Medhane Alem Orthodox Church Fathers were arrested after leading a transformative movement within the Orthodox Church. By teaching the word of God to the youth in the local language, they opened the doors to a deeper understanding of faith, challenging the Church's traditional use of an ancient language that only the clergy could comprehend. Through their inspiring efforts, they became a gateway for many to find Christ and their legacy continues to inspire generations.

Rev. Dr. Tekleab Mengisteab, a medical doctor, ordained priest, and well-known theologian, was abducted by security forces along with his colleague Dr. Fitsum on November 19, 2004. At the time of his arrest, he was working as a diabetes specialist in the National Referral Hospital, which was close to the church where he served. Dr. Tekleab was known for his theological teaching. He used appealing Tigrigna language that made them desirable to read. Dr. Tekleab wrote many books and articles in various magazines, including Mekane Hiwot magazine, of which he was the editor-in-chief.

Despite being watched by the government, Dr. Tekleab continued to write and teach spiritual messages until his arrest. Since November 19, 2004, he has been in prison while his wife and children live in exile.
